Can't Forgive Myself

Have you said, or heard someone else say, "I know God has forgiven me, but I can't forgive myself."?  For those in Christ, it is understood (or should be) that there "is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus" Romans 8:1.  Our feelings of guilt and shame don't always seem to follow what we know/believe to be true in our heads.  So, I've come up with an exercise to hopefully help bring some perspective to unforgiveness we may harbor for ourselves. . . .  Picture yourself standing before Jesus as he is dying on the cross.  Look into his dimming eyes as his breath shallows.  His back is in ribbons and bloody from his lashing and now rubs against a rough splintered beam.  His hands and feet are spiked to the wood holding him suspended between heaven and earth.  Say to Him, "I'm sorry Jesus, I know that You have paid for my sin, but this isn't enough for me to forgive myself."  Does this help?  Hopefully it does help bring the focus back to the Author and Finisher of our faith.
