Belonging to the church, in my mind, is as much a reality as the fact that I belong to Christ. I can’t really separate these two things. Inasmuch as I can’t pick and choose what I prefer to believe in the Bible, I also can’t believe that I belong to Christ who purchased me with His blood and at the same time say I’m not a part of the larger group of people whom He also purchased with his blood. I heard of a pastor who recently stated vehemently that his church would not be talking about Charlie Kirk because, at his church, they only glorify Jesus Christ. I thought to myself that this is a shame, but as I thought of it further, it seems more like robbery. There are is no greater honor in Christ’s kingdom than to follow Him and be found faithful in martyrdom. The scripture regarding the grain of wheat that dies has been mentioned by a number of people after Charlie's death. It is written in Matthew 12:24 “ Very truly I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds.” Yes, this was Jesus talking about his own death, but it has also been traditionally held that “the blood of the martyrs is the seed of the church” by the early church leader, Tertullian. I think it may be helpful to look at it from a different perspective. What if, in the New Testament times, the church had the same response. If it were said of Stephen, the church’s first martyr after Christ, “We will NOT be talking about Stephen today. We only follow and lift up the name of Jesus here.” Would not the church through these past two thousand years have been robbed of the beauty and glory of Jesus through the life of this saint?
